Cancellation of Free Sequencing Service:

The Dolan DNA Learning Center (DNALC) will discontinue its sequencing service as of January 1, 2011.

Over the past 10 years our expenses for this service have grown substantially and we are no longer able to absorb this cost. At the same time, the cost of commercial sequencing has dropped substantially.

By the start of next year, sequencing through Genewiz (www.genewiz.com) will be as easy as through the DNALC. You will be able to create a DNALC-linked account on the GENEWIZ site that will entitle you to the sequence discount and make your data automatically available on the DNALC’s Bioservers (www.bioservers.org/). Details on how to submit samples will be posted on our website before the end of the year.

PLEASE NOTE: Users should not contact Genewiz directly with any questions at this time; instead please address all questions to dnalcseq@cshl.edu.

This new arrangement includes a number of benefits:

  • The turn-around time for your sequence will be 24-48 hours.
  • Tools at the GENEWIZ site will allow you to instantly assess the quality of your sequences using quality control scores. You can also view the sequence and trace files without leaving the website.
  • GENEWIZ includes a DNA sample cleanup that will further enhance the quality of your sequence.

We understand that for some institutions this new arrangement will create a financial burden that may make sequencing impossible with students. Therefore, we will be providing a limited amount of financial support to institutions that can document their need. Scholarship applications will be made available on Genetic Origins (www.geneticorigins.org) before the end of the year. Criteria for receiving this support will include:

  • The percentage of economically disadvantaged students.
  • The percentage of underprivileged and underrepresented minority students.
  • The number of student samples.
